If you&#39;re ready to contribute to meaningful projects and help lay the foundation for a growing team, we’d like to hear from you.</p> <h2><strong>The role</strong></h2> <p>As the Engineering Manager for the <strong>Customer Orders</strong> squad at HelloFresh, you will lead the engineering vision and execution for the experience of <strong>actually getting a HelloFresh box</strong>. Your squad owns how a customer&#39;s order comes into being and is tracked: <strong>subscription orders created at cutoff</strong> and <strong>one-time purchases placed on demand</strong>, plus <strong>order tracking</strong>. This is the order-processing backbone that turns a customer&#39;s intent into a placed, accurate, trackable order across our global brands.</p> <p>This is a <strong>backend-first</strong> role at its core. Order processing is where correctness, resilience, and scale matter most: every order must be accurate, idempotent, and traceable, and the platform must hold up at HelloFresh scale — around <strong>7 million active customers across 18 countries</strong>, with close to <strong>1 billion meals delivered a year</strong>. At the same time, you and your team will <strong>work in a cross-functional squad</strong> with product, frontend, and data.</p> <p>We are looking for a leader who brings deep backend engineering judgement and is energised by collaborating across disciplines to make <strong>HelloFresh better</strong>. So even if you don&#39;t “tick all the boxes” but think you&#39;d thrive in this role, we&#39;d really like to learn more about you.</p> <h2><strong>What You’ll Do: The Recipe</strong></h2> <p>At HelloFresh we are moving away from a model where software developers just execute tickets toward one where product engineers are trusted to own customer problems. A Product Engineer takes a problem, forms a point of view, validates it with customers and data, and ships it using AI as a force multiplier.</p> <ul> <li>Lead, inspire and grow a cross-functional team of 7 engineers, ensuring smooth delivery and continuous improvement of the Customer Orders systems and tech real estate.</li> <li>Own the architecture and reliability of <strong>order creation and tracking</strong> — subscription orders placed at cutoff and one-time purchases on demand — with a strong focus on correctness, idempotency, data integrity, and operational excellence.</li> <li>Drive design decisions for <strong>scalable, event-driven services</strong> (e.g., Kafka) that place and track high volumes of orders with the highest quality and resilience standards.</li> <li>Operate as an engineering leader within a <strong>cross-functional squad</strong>, partner closely with product and data to deliver end-to-end customer outcomes and make joint decisions across disciplines.</li> <li>Champion observability, on-call health, and incident readiness so order creation and tracking stay accurate and available around the clock.</li> <li>Actively contribute to hiring and capacity planning, conduct regular code reviews, and mentor engineers.</li> <li>Drive a continuous improvement culture and promote the HelloFresh DNA.</li> <li>Work beyond your specialization when the problem demands it. Shipping is the beginning of the learning cycle, not the end.</li> <li>&nbsp;</li> </ul> <h2><strong>What you’ll bring: The Ingredients</strong></h2> <ul> <li>Hands-on experience working with AI tooling (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot) beyond casual experimentation. You use AI agents every day. You have a practical sense of how the context you provide to AI tools shapes output quality, and how to set boundaries on AI-generated work.</li> <li>You have led a team in an agile environment (5+ engineers), ideally within a cross-functional squad setup.</li> <li>You bring 6+ years of hands-on <strong>backend development experience</strong>.</li> <li>Deep experience building <strong>scalable microservices and event-driven systems</strong> (e.g., Kafka), especially where correctness, idempotency, and data consistency are critical — such as order processing, payments, or other transactional domains.</li> <li>Experience designing and operating high-throughput backend systems that other teams and customer-facing surfaces depend on.</li> <li>Experience with DevOps practices and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud), including observability and production ownership.</li> <li>A collaborative mindset and comfort working cross-functionally with product, frontend, and data partners.</li> <li>You are an empathetic, strong communicator and active listener.</li> <li>You are a self-organized individual who can operate autonomously, solve complex problems, and remove roadblocks.</li> <li>You are a humble leader who can motivate a team and drive them to their highest potential.</li> <li>You take full ownership.
